BLACK COFFEE

From township cassette decks to global stages, Black Coffee—born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo—has become more than a DJ; he’s a cultural architect of South African music. Armed since 1994 with deep-house flair fused with jazz and African rhythms, he’s garnered an impressive haul: eight South African Music Awards, multiple DJ Awards, Metro FM Awards, and even a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.

His 2021 album Subconsciously—featuring heavyweights like David Guetta, Diplo, Pharrell Williams, and Usher—not only conquered global charts but also cemented his place among electronic music’s elite  . In 2022, he shattered a ceiling by becoming the first South African DJ to headline Madison Square Garden, a milestone that echoed around the world.

His influence isn’t confined to music alone. In 2025, Black Coffee’s philanthropic vision took a leap forward with the launch of the Black Coffee Music Academy. A glittering gala dinner in Johannesburg raised over R3.1 million—funds designated to build a world-class institution for nurturing young African musical talent  . The mission continues globally with another gala in Monaco during the Grand Prix weekend, signaling his ambition to empower the next generation on a global scale.

He’s also redefining live performance. His collaboration with jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini—complete with orchestra and guest vocalists—promises to blur genre boundaries at the 2025 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, offering a fresh, hybrid sound experience.
