Mbuso Khoza: The Cultural Custodian

Mbuso Khoza: The Cultural Custodian

Mhlengi Mafu

The Legendary Classic from the hills of Eshowe in Zululand emerges Mbuso Khoza, a man whose artistry transcends music, acting, and cultural heritage. Born on 20 July 1978, Khoza grew up immersed in oral traditions, chorales, and storytelling rituals that deeply shaped his artistic soul.

A fusion of Amahubo, Jazz and more, with a voice as soulful as it is ancestral, Khoza blends genres in a way few can. His early acclaim came with his debut album Zilindile, which earned him the Metro FM Award for Best Jazz Album in 2013.

Yet Khoza’s heart lies in amahubo—traditional Zulu hymns that are more than music; they’re cultural narratives. His music masterfully marries Afro-jazz, isiCathamiya, and amahubo to create a sound that’s both ancient and avant-garde.

A standout moment came with his album Ifa Lomkhono (2023), produced alongside Nduduzo Makhathini—an artful reimagining of ancestral music through layered, jazz-infused arrangements.

Acting and musical storytelling on screen, Khoza is both performer and composer. He portrayed Maphalala in Umkhokha: The Curse, a role he returned to in 2024 after previous absences, all while composing and performing for the show’s soundtrack, including the album Wonk’ AmaJudiya.

His musical fingerprint also graces the historic drama Shaka iLembe, where his work behind the scenes helped shape an authentic Zulu auditory narrative.

Educator, advocate and visionary Khoza is more than a performer—he is a scholar. Holding a Master’s in Arts Heritage from the University of the Witwatersrand, he lectures, mentors, and founded the Afrikan Heritage Ensemble in 2016 to revive African cultural memory through performance and research.

Adding to his engagement, he recently launched a deep-dive cultural podcast, Ikhosomba Lezincithabuchopho, evolving from his radio segments on Ukhozi FM, where he unpacks Zulu culture and amahubo.

Current endeavours and community impact;

•Tour: “Ifa Lomkhono”
He embarked on a national tour in 2024—bringing his album to Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and more, offering communities a journey through heritage-laden music.

•Building a Cultural Hub
Khoza is laying the foundation for the Mbuso Khoza Institute for Heritage and Cultural Studies, envisioned as a living archive for culture, history, and the Zulu language. Though based in Johannesburg for access to support, he plans to build one in Eshowe too.

Khoza’s journey is one of cultural rebirth. He stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation—rooted in amahubo, elevated through jazz, and broadcasting his legacy to the world. Whether through his evocative voice, compelling screen presence, or community-building efforts, Mbuso Khoza invites us into a space where music becomes memory, and heritage becomes something we live, not just remember.
